One of the most common questions we are asked is whether a Power of Attorney needs to be in Arabic to be valid in the UAE. The short answer is yes — any POA used inside the UAE must be in Arabic, or bilingual English-Arabic, and the Arabic version is the legally binding text.
Why Arabic Is Required
Arabic is the official language of the UAE courts, notary publics and government authorities. When a Power of Attorney is presented to a Notary Public, the Dubai Land Department, a bank, or a court, it is the Arabic text that is read and relied upon. An English-only POA cannot be notarised for use in the UAE.
Bilingual POA — English and Arabic Side by Side
In practice, most UAE Powers of Attorney are drafted as bilingual documents, with English and Arabic presented together. This lets the principal fully understand what they are signing while satisfying the legal requirement. The translation must be done by a legal translator certified by the UAE Ministry of Justice — a casual or machine translation will be rejected.
POA Made Abroad — Translation After Attestation
If your POA was executed in another country in English (or any non-Arabic language), it must be translated into Arabic by a UAE-certified legal translator after it completes embassy and MOFA attestation. Getting the sequence right matters.
